Title: Suspension "The painting of Suspension is from the Vertigo series of work, which deals with the nature of human experience. Evoked from a childhood memory of watching my mother get dressed up in a red ball gown and disappear into the night. My imagination then captivated by the sense of occasion, the idea of beauty, mystery and the wonder of being grown up. I have juxtaposed this memory to the momentum of adult life and the pursuit for balance and coherence. My model for this is a local, independent aerialist. Dressed in my mothers ball gown was photographed performing a series of movements, which I elude to the 'dance of life'. The painting, Suspension, speaks of that precarious moment in time, poised at the threshold of change. It relates to the act of believing in something with or without the available evidence and moving forward towards a new sense of one's self in the world." | |

Title: Facing the Other: There's no place like home "Facing the Other: There's no place like home employs the Rubin’s vase, or figure-ground vase, which belong to a famous set of cognitive optical illusions developed around 1915 by the Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin. The image presents the viewer with a mental choice of two interpretations, the two profiles or the vase, demonstrating the figure-ground distinction the brain makes during visual perception. It is not possible to see both interpretations simultaneously, although one can 'flip' swiftly between the two. The phrase ‘there’s no place like home’ belongs to Dorothy in the film The Wizard of Oz. Here, transcribed in Hebrew and Arabic, the words take on a resonance beyond her longing for Kansas to suggest the tension and prejudice that exists between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East." | ![]() |
BRISBANE WINNER: | ^TOP^ |
Title: Mangroves 2 - Memories "Memories of favourite places act as lights in dark places. They guide us and prod us in a world that is rapidly being irreparably damaged. Such memories encourage us to conserve energy and water and to try to retain the beauty that is still here and now." | ![]() |
PERTH WINNER: | ^TOP^ |
Title: I dreamed I was a warewolf "At night time in dimly lit rooms, forgotten objects linger in corners and reminisce about the past. When we throw away objects, do they steal a little bit of our soul? Within the home seemingly harmless and mundane objects seduce and affect us in unexpected ways, often lingering long after their purpose and usefulness has been forgotten and exhausted. Impractical and useless objects beckon irresistibly to us to hold and cherish them. Long after the people who possess them are gone and forgotten, objects remain. They linger in secret drawers, under beds, in jacket pockets; holding within them their precious memories until moths carry them away or they finally crumble into dust, lost and forgotten forever at the back of the linen cupboard." | ![]() |

Title: Parkcrest "I am interested in the way people perceive the places where they live. Across the road from my house is a large forest. It looms above us yet we ignore it completely – too used to living with it to really see it. I am also interested in how the way the paint is put on a surface can evoke sound and weather. The rhythm of the brushstrokes become like pouring, rustling sounds in the mind." | ![]() |
